General Kiprian Kandratowich

Generał Kipryyan Kandratovich.

Generał Kipryyan Kandratovich (April 28, 1859 village Zinevichy (Lida district) - October 31, 1932, the estate Harodnya, (Lida district) - Russian and Belarusian military leader, a member of the National Secretariat of the BNR (Belarusian People's Republic).

Few people remember those who fought against the Bolsheviks. The Socialist revolution broke destinies of entire families and radically changed history. The worst of it was the suffering of millions of people. Those who resisted to the new government established in 1917 were ostracized. Many Russian army generals stood up against the new government. Belarusian general Kipryyan Kandratovich was one of them. He was not only a soldier. In peacetime he contributed to various newspapers. When Belarusian nationalists raised their voice, Kandratovich came to help his people. He was minister for military affairs in the Belarusian National Republic (BNR) government tasked with forming Belarus' first professional army. Belarusian and Lithuanian encyclopedias erroneously said that Kandratovich fled to France after the retreat of BNR forces. But it was not true. The Belarusian general lived in his native Belarus, died in 1932 and was buried at the Orthodox cemetery in Lida. The general's grandsons and grand-grandsons currently live in Britain and the United States.
