Summary
This monograph explores the place of mestechki in the structure of settlements in Belarus, peculiarities of their functioning and role in social, economic and cultural development of Belarus at the end of the 18th - the first half of the 19th centuries. In the case of this period we could see that mestechki were interesting, multifaceted phenomenon of Belarusian history because:
1. Mestechki were the crossroads of town and village
2. Mestechki were borderlands of different ethnicities, religions, languages and cultures
3. Mestechki were centres of Jewish history and culture, main settlements on a mental map of the lost Jewish world of the Eastern Europe
4. Mestechki were keepers of local traditions of self-government which were based on the principles of religious tolerance and constructive multiethnicity
5. Mestechki were the model of economic, social and cultural organisation for a population of small urban settlements in the conditions of political and economic transformation
The most important historical meaning of mestechki is that they were contact areas between different ethnicities, religions, languages and cultures. Mestechki were places where they all met each other and existed in harmony. This is why mestechko had peculiar economic, social and cultural life, its own inimitable atmosphere and unique relations between its inhabitants.
